President Barack Obama will take the oath of office with two bibles that once belonged to a pair of civil rights icons: Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr.
King’s “traveling bible” was provided by his family, while the Lincoln bible is from the Library of Congress and was used during the 16th president’s inauguration on March 4, 1861; Obama also used the Lincoln bible during his first inauguration in 2009.
The Lincoln and King good books will be used during this year’s public inauguration ceremony on Monday, Jan. 21, announced the Presidential Inaugural Committee. King’s book will be stacked atop Lincoln’s.
Shortly after the House passed a deal averting the fiscal cliff, the White House announced President Obama will be heading to Hawaii to finish out his vacation.
His wife and daughters have been there since before Christmas, but he left them to return to Washington to resolve the cliff standoff with Congress.
The White House did not say how long the president would stay, but earlier security arrangements indicated the island of Oahu was prepared for him to stay until Jan. 6.
